The banjo was one of the instruments that started the blues. The banjo came to America from Senegal. Banjo great Gus Cannon popularized the early blues with his jug bands in the 1920’s and 30’s. Gus got his start playing in the Mississippi Delta and then later in Memphis, Tennessee.
